Ground Beef Tacos

Ground beef is an all-time favorite of mine. I love tacos, and when I cook them, I love to use ground beef filling. You really cannot go wrong with ground beef in any meal. These crunchy Taco Shells are filled with deliciously cooked ground beef, topped with lettuce, diced tomatoes, diced red onions, diced cucumbers, and shredded cheese. It is a quick and easy dinner to whip up for your family on a busy evening. 

Where did Taco originate?

It is believed that the first Taco originated in Mexico dated back to the 18th century. It has now transformed into a fast-food staple. Taco is made from both corn or flour. Corn Taco mostly comes in yellow. I prefer the corn version of Taco. For this recipe, I used gluten-free corn Taco Shells.

How to make Taco?

The main ingredient is ground beef (preferably 90% lean). Other ingredients include yellow onions, tomatoes (either fresh or canned), and taco seasoning. There are a variety of ways to garnish Taco. You can choose from the likes of shredded cheese, lettuce, avocados, cucumbers, red onions, sour cream, and the list goes on. It is really up to your personal preference.

To season your Taco, you can buy the seasoning along with the Taco Shells in the grocery store. However, I love to make my own Taco seasoning. I made my Taco seasoning with chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, ground cumin, ground jalapeno, dried thyme, dried oregano, smoked paprika, and red pepper flakes. Of course, if you do not eat very spicy food, you can eliminate the red pepper flakes and ground jalapeno.

Cooking the Ground Beef

Heat oil in a large pan over high to medium heat. Add onions, cook until slightly browned, and you get that delicious aroma. Add ground beef and separate it with a wooden spoon or spatula. Cook for about 5-6 minutes, stirring intermittently. Drain off excess fat. Now add all your seasonings. Combine well to ensure the seasonings are evenly distributed throughout the meat. Add tomato sauce and diced tomatoes, and stir, allow it to simmer for 2-3 minutes, then turn off the heat. Using a large spoon, fill the Taco Shells with the cooked ground beef and garnish to your personal preference. Serve immediately.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 yellow onion medium chopped
  • 1/2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1/4 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp ground jalapeno optional
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes optional
  • 2 tbsp tomato sauce
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes (fresh)
  • 1/4 cup corn
  • 8-10 taco shells

Instructions

  • Heat oil in a large pan over high to medium heat.

  • Add chili powder, salt, ground cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, dried oregano, smoked paprika, ground jalapeno and crushed red pepper flakes. Stir well to ensure that the seasonings are evenly distributed to coat the meat.
  • Add tomato sauce, diced tomatoes and corn, stir well, allow it to simmer for 2-3 minutes, then turn off the heat.
  • Using a large spoon, fill the Taco Shells with the cooked ground beef and garnish to your preference. Serve immediately.
